Final Post

This class has taught me so much, I thought I knew a lot about social media but oh man was I wrong. This class has taught me more about Facebook and twitter, and how each things on Social media actually are. I learned just how important social media is to everything we have in this world from Jobs, to relationships, to networking. Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn have grown alot, and they will continue to grow as our world keeps evolving.  When I first started the class I just had one image in my mind of social media and it was just to stay connected with friends, but its so much more and If it wasn’t for this class I would never of learned that. Social media is one of the greatest inventions we have had, it brings the whole world together and connects people in so many different ways, and thats the beauty of social media and I learned it from this class.

Don’t be ashamed

Being ashamed is a normal feeling, but to what extent is it ok? On social media there can be a lot of private information go viral without your allowance. Social media can be a great place to intertact with people and often a fun thing to do with friends, but it can also be a hurtful place where a lot of things can go wrong for a person. There is a lot of cyber bullying going on in social media, and there are things that can put people in dark places and sometimes force people to choose to take their own lives.

I watched the speech Monica lewinsky did, and if you don’t know Monica Lewinsky she is infamous for her affair with the President of the united states bill Clinton. Monica is just like a lot of people, she was young and made a mistake and fell in love with her boss as she stated, but her boss was more prominent than most peoples boss. Monica stated she was put through the public eye and was hurt very deeply by this, she went through a very dark time that forced her to go hiding from the public eye for over 12 years. She said the shame she went through from people hearing recordings of her voices to pictures of her on the internet to even her name being mentioned in rap songs over 40 times and not in a flattering way. The trials she endured were tough on her to the point where her parents feared she would take her own life, and that should never be the case, and this was before social media got popular so it could of been worse. Monica wanted people to hear her story so we can put an end to hurtful acts on social media and media in general

The last article I read was about the professional that went to Africa for work and tweeted about getting aids, but saying kidding Im white. How stupid can you be? not only is that hurtful to people but that can hurt your career, once they got off the plane they realized the tweet blew up and went viral forcing her job to fire her and her to ruin her career.

The point to get here is to be smart when it comes to social media, because one mistake can hurt your career, reputation or ultimately hurt another. Social media is a great place but it can also be harmful so be safe on social media people, and don’t be ashamed of who you are no matter what!

Farewell pres

President Obama was the first african american president, yes we all know that, and he was in office for 8 years. This blog is not to bash or love Obama, whether you liked him or not you can not deny the man was one hell of a speaker, and had a very much a likable personality that many were drawn to. The farewell speech that the president gave was definitely a great speech, it had all the makings of a memorable speech, humor, seriousness, sadness and lastly the great ending that makes the whole speech.  the beginning of the speech talks about how he first came to  as a young gentleman in his early 20’s and how he was trying to find the purpose of life and what he was meant to do, and when he was searching is when he found out what he was meant to do, help people.  Then he went on to talk about what he did in his 8 years in office, which didn’t sound like a whole lot, but thats for another time. The thing I thought he did really well in his speech was mix in not just what he did during his presidency and all that he accomplished or all he wanted to accomplish but he also talked about other things such as life and the american people and even a little about him self before being in office and even had a little humor to the speech. President Obama really made you feel like he was talking to you with his speech, almost like he was touching each american in their own way, he also did a very good job of making it emotional and involving his family and almost pulling at the heart strings of every american watching or listening to the speech across america. The speech was definitely a good one, He made it not just about him but about the people and about america, which was an excellent game plan by whoever wrote his speech. Lastly I think Obama could of done a better job of talking about what he waned for america in the future and instead of making it about the now, but add in a little but of the future.

Marketing on Instagram

One of my favorite brands is actually a new brand that just started recently and its one that is very close to me because of who owns and runs the brand. One of my good friends and former teammates called me up and pitched me this idea he was thinking about doing, and in the few months that its been off the ground, it has had a good amount of success and i think thats a direct indication of the marketing the company has been doing on social media especially on Instagram. He has shot up with over 10k followers in just a short few months, and he does a great job of posting pictures and having live videos and does a great job at connecting to his fans and consumers.

The best part about the brand is its affordable, and why I think he has had a lot of his success is because he has targeted a very specific brand in baseball players, and he’s having professional baseball players model his gear in his pictures and I think thats also why he’s blowing up. Having a successful marketing plan on social media is the best way to grow your brand. Go check it out!

Who am I?

I am a person who cares more about others well being than my own. How have I reached this sentence?

Growing up in a house hold of all men besides my mom, we were always taught to treat others with respect and respect woman and act like a gentleman at all times. My mom wanted me and my brothers to always know that if we put others interest in front ours that our interest and desires would take care of themselves. I have to admit, I have selfish tendencies just like every other person in this world, but I do put others in front of my self most of the time. Sometimes people have told me I need to put my self first sometimes because I’m always stopping whatever I am  doing to help others when needed.

It all started within the household of the Rogalla’s, yes but I first really became this person when I started working with special needs kids in high school. When I was working with those wonderful kids closely everyday for four years you learn somethings about your self and being a good person.

Working with the kids that were going through the problems that they had and were still able to have a smile on their face and put a smile on mine, that was special. So when you have to stop what you are doing to put these kids needs in front of yours to help them, that wasn’t a problem for me, and i guess it just stuck with me.

Putting others in front of me is just who I am these days, I love taking care of people and love that feeling I get when someone is happy and I assisted with that.

Social Media

Social Media is apart of our every day life, you have two options, you can join or suffer and be left behind. I personally chose to be apart of the fad, that most thought would die down. Instead social media is more alive than ever. I am a huge fan of Instagram and twitter. I use these two accounts the most because they are easy to use and most of my friends are on these two accounts. I don’t use Facebook as much as I use to. Facebook is just too old for me and my grandma is on Facebook.  Social media is a great way for me and all my friends to stay in touch, before these accounts I would have to text and call, but with these two accounts have allowed me to stay on top of my friends with what ever they are doing or wherever they are at. I really like social media because its the best way to get news and also keep up on what everyone I know is doing. In this class I hope to gain a deeper acknowledgment into what really goes into the making of social media and how the behind the scenes works. My favorite sites and tools to use are some blog sites and sports news sites, because I’m so into sports.

I think that social media is one of the best things to ever happen to this world for a variety of reasons, its the best way to keep up with whats going on in this world from news or keeping up with ones own friend groups. I cant wait to learn more about social media and this class, because there is so many things to learn about the wide world of social media.

Reflection

Going back to the beginning of the semester, i had no clue what i was going to learn from this class. Turn the clock forward to about the last couple of weeks of the semester i have learned so much and i’m honestly extremely glad that i took this class. I came into this class newly after just changing my major to journalism, and i no prior knowledge of anything to do with journalism besides the aspect that i knew i would be writing and a little bit of tech sav. I have learned many things from this class, and i think its a very good intro level class. I think the content we reviewed in class was interesting. For example, I thought Rushkoff’s 10 Commandments were very interesting. I found myself relating to many of them, especially “live in person.” I constantly find myself on my phone when at a party, concert, on vacation. I remember when my family went to the Dominican Republic, the biggest issue for my family was getting the wifi to work consistently.I think I would have to say I liked the second half of the semester better than the first in this class. Like I said, I wasn’t very fond of the books. I definitely preferred our videos and classroom discussions more after fall break. I really liked all the videos that gave me a better visual to what we were learning.

what is design?

I really enjoyed the talk that Justin had with us, I thought that I gained some very valuable information. I took away many things about design that i never would of known unless Justin had that talk with us. From the standpoint of the article i read, I wasn’t aware of the issues that go along with this topic, and just how many different types of design there are. Just look at the different types of designers they had at the Design and Social Justice symposium. There were many different types of people speaking from graphic designers to former human rights activist.

graphic design

My view of designers and what they do have definitely changed. Now i know how important design really is and how much influence Graphic designers have over many people because of there work. Just think about how many people view something and look at something that a designer has made, so the power they have is definitely something special

What is Public Relations

Richard Edelman’s speech was very intriguing and full of very useful information. The speech was a bit confusing at times but I think I got the point the Mr. Edelman was trying to push across. His main point that he was saying is how public relations is evolving today in our world. With our world and society changing in so many different ways, we have to change with it. He explains that right now, he urges students to show and tell their ideas. He encourages students to form ideas based on data and insights.

Edelman explains to us what he believes is the primary role of a public relations agency, “we lead with communications to evolve, promote and protect both brands and reputations.” He elaborates on each of those. With evolving, he explains that public relations helps “position and transform” companies and their brands. With promoting, he explains that public relations helps launch products by “creating demand, sparking conversations, generating visibility, driving retail traffic and triggering purchase.” And with protecting, he explains that public relations engages in challenging work that includes navigating through reputational attacks and managing issues.

pr

Edelman then gives some advice as to what companies are looking for in people in PR. He explains that his company looks for individuals who have at least a base level of knowledge in social media management, digital advertising, photography, design, etc. Public relations individuals need to bring curiosity to the table. They need individuals that are open to new ideas, creative, and willing to experiment.
